At the Richterhütte: Krimml: Avalanche tore nine snowshoe hikers – two injured

A group of nine snowshoe hikers was lucky in misfortune on Thursday afternoon in Krimml. The Germans were caught in an avalanche, two of them were injured.

On Thursday, a German hiking group of nine people went on a snowshoe hike to the Richterhütte in the Reinbachtal in Krimml. On a steep north-west slope, the Germans took off their snowshoes to continue trudging vertically on foot.

At about 2,300 meters above sea level, below the Richter hut, a slab of snow came loose around 11:30 a.m. and carried everyone involved with it. According to the first analysis of the Salzburg avalanche warning service, the warning level was 2/moderate.

The slab of snow was around 150 meters long and 60 meters wide with cracks between 30 and 70 centimeters high.

All those involved were partially buried in the avalanche run-out area, but were able to free themselves. Passing ski tourers made an emergency call.

A 62-year-old woman suffered an ankle injury and was flown to the Schwaz hospital with the ambulance helicopter. Another 45-year-old winter sports enthusiast suffered a hip injury and was also transported by helicopter to the Zell am See hospital after receiving first aid.
