KYIV. March 11th. UNN. Cyprus will allocate 2% of gross domestic product to defense spending, as other EU member states do, to strengthen its foreign policy position, reports UNN with reference to Apnews.

“I was also the minister of foreign affairs and I know that without strong deterrence, without strong protection, your right to vote in matters of foreign policy is clearly limited,” Christodoulidis said.

According to official data, the GDP of Cyprus in 2022 was estimated at 27 billion euros. The target of 2% of GDP means a small increase in current spending on the Cypriot military.

The decision also reflects a commitment by NATO members to spend 2 percent of their GDP on defense spending, although Christodoulides has said he has no current intention to apply for membership in the military alliance.
