January 7, 2016: Iran accused Saudi Arabia of carrying out air strikes on its embassy in Yemen. Saudi officials denied the accusation.
May 29, 2016: Iran prevented sending its citizens to perform Hajj and accused Saudi Arabia of failing to ensure the safety of pilgrims.
September 14, 2019: Saudi Arabia held Iran responsible for attacks on its oil facilities and disrupted half of the kingdom’s supplies. Iran denied responsibility, while the Yemeni Houthi group claimed responsibility for the attacks.
April 9, 2021: Iran and Saudi Arabia held their first direct talks since severing relations, hosted by Baghdad. During the period from April to September 2022, four rounds of talks were held in response to mediation efforts, the bulk of which were made by Iraq and the Sultanate of Oman.
March 13, 2022: Iran withdrew from the talks before a planned fifth round without giving reasons, the day after mass executions in Saudi Arabia that activists said included 41 Shiites.
April 21, 2022: Iran and Saudi Arabia hold a fifth round of talks.
October 19, 2022: The senior adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran calls for the reopening of the Saudi and Iranian embassies.
December 9, 2022: Chinese President Xi Jinping visits Saudi Arabia and holds talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
February 16, 2023: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi visited China, where he met Xi.
