Marò, the public prosecutor of Rome asks for the dismissal for Latorre and Girone from the accusation of murder of Indian fishermen: “Insufficient elements”

The Rome prosecutor’s office asked for the filing for Massimiliano Latorre e Salvatore Girone, the two navy fusiliers accused of killing two on February 15, 2012 Indian fishermen board a fishing boat off the coast of Kerala in southwestern India. With the same accusation the military had been arrested e detained in India, remaining stuck in the Asian country for years (Latorre returned to Italy in 2015, Girone in 2016) and giving rise to a long international dispute between the two states.

An investigation had been opened on the killing of the fishermen in Rome, conducted by the deputy prosecutor Erminio Amelio. Latorre and Girone had been listened to for the first time on January 3, 2013: in the same year an appraisal was prepared on a computer and a camera that were on board the Enrica Lexie, the military ship they were on duty on. A second interrogation took place last July. According to the prosecutor, the elements collected regarding the responsibility of the two marines they are not enough to start the process: the investigating judge must pronounce on the request.
