Data released by the General Register of Employed and Unemployed People (Caged), of the Ministry of Economy’s Labor Secretariat, show the creation of 83,297 formal jobs in January this year.
Last year, during the same period, 155,178 jobs had been created, in the unadjusted data, which do not consider declarations submitted late by employers.
The opening of formal jobs fell in January 2023 due to the economic slowdown and the closing of temporary jobs in commerce. The indicator measures the difference between hiring and firing.
Despite the slowdown compared to January last year, there was an improvement compared to December, when 440,669 posts had been closed.
Analysis by sectors
In the division by branches of activity, the statistic was led by services, with the opening of 40,686 jobs, followed by civil construction, with 38,965 more jobs. In third place comes industry (processing, extraction and other types) with the creation of 34,023 jobs.
The level of employment also increased in agriculture, with the opening of 23,147 jobs. Only commerce, pressured by the closing of temporary vacancies typical of the beginning of the year, extinguished formal jobs last month, with the closing of 53,524 vacancies.
Highlights
In the service sector, job creation was driven by the public administration, defense and social security, education, human health and social services segment, with the opening of 19,463 formal jobs.
The category of information, communication and financial, real estate, professional and administrative activities created 16,447 vacancies.
In industry, the positive highlight was the transformation industry, which hired 33,738 more workers than it dismissed. In second place was the extractive industry, which opened 341 jobs.
Analysis by regions
Of the five Brazilian regions, three created formal jobs in January. The South region led the opening of jobs, with 32,169 more jobs, followed by the Midwest, benefited by the grain harvest, with 27,352 jobs.
Then comes the Southeast, with 18,778 posts. The Northeast closed 133 jobs, and the North extinguished 482 formal vacancies last month.
In the division by Federation units, 16 registered a positive balance, and nine extinguished vacancies. The highlights in job creation were São Paulo (+18,663 jobs), Santa Catarina (+15,727) and Mato Grosso (+13,715). The largest negative variations occurred in Ceará (-3,033 posts), Pará (-1,853) and Paraíba (-1,717).
