During the Great Famine the Egyptians sold their possessions, lands and themselves as slaves to Pharaoh to get food. Joseph said to the people, “Today I have bought you and your lands for Pharaoh. Now, I give you the seed. Plant it in the ground. Pay one-fifth of the produce to Pharaoh. Let the remaining four parts be seed for your fields and food for you and your household and children.” They said, “You have saved our lives. May we find comfort in your eyes as the leader! We will be Pharaoh’s slaves.” Joseph brought a land law in Egypt. That remains the case to this day. One-fifth belonged to Pharaoh.

The Israelites settled in the land of Goshen in Egypt, took possession of it, and became very numerous there. Jacob stayed in Egypt for seventeen years. His life was a total of one hundred and forty-seven years. When he saw that the day of his death was approaching, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “Do not bury me in the land of Egypt. After I have escaped with my ancestors, take me out of Egypt and bury me in the graves of my ancestors.” Joseph said, “I will do as you say.”
