“Covid-19 vaccines, treatments and trials have been behind decades of publicly funded research. Governments have spent billions in taxpayer money on research, development and pre-orders to reduce risks for drug companies.
Insisting on people vaccines, people tests and people treatments, it also alleges that instead of releasing vaccines, tests and treatments based on demand, pharmaceutical companies maximize their profits by selling doses to rich countries first.
13 lakh people could have been saved
A study last year showed that by 2021, if vaccines were more evenly distributed, one preventable death could be saved every 24 seconds, or about 1.3 million people.
Citing this study, the letter urged leaders and governments to support the current international agreement toward a pandemic agreement. This open letter was coordinated by the People’s Vaccination Coalition of NGOs.
Other signatories to the letter include several Nobel laureates, influential leaders and former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Among the signatories of this letter are current and former UN Included are agency heads and former heads of state from more than 40 countries.
