According to what emerged in the investigation ofState, National Institute of Statistics, conducted in the reference period December 2020 – January 2021, one in five Italians, so 22.2 percent of the population, had difficulty in meeting their financial commitments how to pay mortgage, bills, rent, expenses for meals.

Hence, at least eleven million citizens have had difficulty and they struggled to even support food costs.
The significant data that emerged from the study says that the difficulties have often overlapped: those who have not been able to pay the rent have struggled to meet other expenses, such as bills.

Istat says 76.2 percent of Italians have had trouble coping two economic commitments and as many as 34.7 percent even four.
These numbers tell how the second wave pandemic was particularly hard for a large portion of the population.

In detail, 13.4 percent of respondents had problems paying their bills (11.8 percent had to postpone paymentor, 9.1 percent failed to pay for them), 16.5 percent had to forgo vacation, 13.9 percent failed to meet an unexpected expense, 6.3 percent failed to pay the mortgage payments or a loan or the necessary expenses for meals while 6.7 percent failed to pay the rent.

As was presumed the major problems were found in the South where the problems affected 30.7 percent of the population against 18.4 in the north of the country and 17 percent in the center.
All economic difficulties are more widespread in the southern regions: almost one in four citizens failed to go on vacation (13.2 percent in the Center), one in five failed to meet an unexpected expense (6.2 percent in the Center); 14.4 percent failed to pay their bills (7.1 percent in the North, 4.4 percent in the Center). About one in 10 citizens has failed to pay the installments of a mortgage, loan or rent; a similar share of people failed to support meal expenses.
