WhatsApp is rolling out a new update through the TestFlight beta program, where the sender’s name replaces the phone number in the chat list when you receive a message from an unknown contact in a group chat, for some beta testers.

This is a new feature where the sender’s name takes precedence over the phone number in group chats. During this process, the location of the senders’ phone numbers and names will be changed within the message bubble in order to make it easier for users to identify unknown group participants.

Additionally, this feature was quietly released to users after installing the WhatsApp for iOS 23.1.75 update. An enhancement to this feature is now available after installing the latest beta update of WhatsApp for iOS 23.5.0.73 from the TestFlight app by showing changes in the chat list:

This feature makes it easy for the recipient to understand who the unknown contact is without saving the number as a new contact. We think this is really useful in large group chats where it can be difficult to keep track of who is who, in addition to the feature that adds profile icons in group chats.

Note that the update does not mean that the phone number is hidden for group members as the phone number can still be obtained by opening their chat details. A phone number masking feature may be available for those community-linked groups and certain business accounts in the future.

This feature is available to some beta testers who install the latest version of WhatsApp beta for iOS from the TestFlight app, and is rolling out to more people over the next few days.
