Five dead after refugee boat sinks off Turkish coast

Ankara: Five refugees died after their dinghy capsized in the Aegean Sea off Turkey’s southwest coast. Turkish Coast Guard rescued 11 people stranded at sea. Five refugees were found near the coast of Greece. The Turkish government brought the injured to the coast of Didim and provided them with medical care. The boat was hidden near Pharmaconisi Island, 10 nautical miles from Didim.

Greek and Turkish coastguards said there were 31 refugees on board and rescue operations were ongoing. The Turkish coastguard said it reached the scene after receiving information that the boat was sinking. 11 people, including a child, were rescued and brought to Didim port and handed over to health workers. Further west in the Mediterranean, the Italian coastguard said it had rescued more than 1,300 migrants in three separate operations off the southern tip of Italy.
