James, a Democrat running for governor of New York, asked to hear Trump’s testimony on Jan. 7 at her New York office, the Washington Post reported.

James’ office has accused the Trump group of ignoring summonses the organization received as part of the civil investigation being conducted against it. After the Supreme Court ordered the organization to comply with the summons orders in September, the prosecutor’s office said: “Our work will continue without hesitation because no one is above the law.”

James’ office is also conducting a criminal investigation against Trump’s organization in collaboration with the Manhattan Prosecutor’s Office. In October, Trump testified in New York as part of a lawsuit related to the Trump Tower security guards’ assault on Mexican protesters in 2015.

In the past, Trump has called the ongoing investigation against him a “witch hunt.” James worked for two years to find out if the Trump group had lied to banks and authorities about the value of its assets – in order to win loans on improved terms and enjoy tax benefits.

Trump’s request for testimony is a first step that could lead to the court ordering him to testify. Trump’s sons were questioned last year by prosecutors’ investigators, and one of them was even ordered to appear before the court.
