According to the report in the British Daily Mail, in April 2022, Masha Moskalva, from the city of Yefremov in the Tula region of Russia, was asked by her teacher to draw a picture supporting the Russian soldiers in Ukraine. Instead, Masha drew a Ukrainian flag, a woman and a child being attacked by rockets, with the inscriptions “I’m against war” and “Glory to Ukraine” next to them.

Masha’s teacher reported this to the principal, who called the police. Masha’s father, Alexey, said that his daughter ran away from the classroom after seeing the police waiting for her outside the school. According to him, “she was afraid, and I promised her that I would come to school and wait for her until the lessons were over.” But the next day, her father was taken and violently interrogated and Masha was sent to an orphanage. Alexey is currently under house arrest, and is facing a prison sentence for his daughter’s speech against the Russian regime.

A human rights activist who tried to help the family said that they did not allow Alexey to communicate with any outside party. According to him, “the girl was last seen at the beginning of March, a few days later I gave her the phone so she could call me, but I didn’t hear from her.”
