by time news

Farmers have demanded that the irrigation channel of Chethiyathoppu-Veeranam lake should be dug.

Viranam Lake, which starts at Boothangudi near Chethiyathope, extends up to Lalpettai and has a wide area up to Cholatharam and Vanamadevi. There are a total of 32 sluices and canals for irrigation on the lower bank of the lake starting from Boothangudi to Lalpet.

In the drains, the remaining water from Paripuranantham, Velliakudy, Odakanalluar, Madurandaganalluar, Kilanantham and Kannangudi, flows into the stream for irrigation.

This canal has been dug up two years ago, and now Budharmandi, Sambu Bhogham and Agayathamarai have spread over and obstructed irrigation. During the season of samba planting and direct sowing of paddy, the water released in the lake is completely transported to the farmers of Kannangudi.

Now that the summer season has started, the farmers have demanded that the public works authorities should take action to remove the durwari bushes from this canal leading to irrigation from Veeranam lake.
