Cyclone Freddy kills at least 99 in Malawi

by time news

Cyclone Freddy wreaked havoc in the southern African country of Mozambique. More than 100 people died in Malawi and Mozambique. This is the second time in a month that Hurricane Freddy has made landfall. Cyclone Freddy, the world’s longest-lasting tropical cyclone, made landfall in Mozambique for the second time on Saturday night.

French weather agency Meteo-France warned that Freddie would move further inland over the weekend, bringing heavy rain to Mozambique and southern Malawi, with rain likely in Zimbabwe and Zambia. Meteo-France raised concerns that the cyclone is unlikely to weaken on land in the coming week and has a high chance of moving back out to sea.

About 200 people have been injured. According to the report, 16 people are missing. Police said rescuers were searching for people in Chilobwe and Ndirande, the two worst-hit townships in Blantyre.
