Citi Foundation will help improve food safety

This US$25 million program seeks to support non-profit organizations that are leading innovative projects in the field.

The Savior. The Citi Foundation announced its first Global Innovation Challenge to increase the impact of nonprofit organizations around the world dedicated to developing innovative solutions that improve food safety.

This first challenge includes $25 million, which will be allocated to 50 organizations, in order to support pilot developments or the expansion of ideas and projects aimed at addressing this problem and strengthening the physical and financial health of low-income families and communities.

Around 770 million people worldwide suffer from some type of malnutrition. In this context, food security constitutes one of the main global crises of today.

Citi Global Perspectives & Solutions (GPS) argues that the estimated impact of malnutrition on the global economy could be as high as $3.5 trillion per year ($500 for every person on the planet), as a result of record highs in food prices. food and other macroeconomic factors that in turn generate civil unrest, global displacement and other circumstances.

“Too many families around the world face the daily struggle of not knowing when and where their next meal will come from,” lamented Brandee McHale, president of the Citi Foundation and Citi’s chief investment and community development officer.

The Citi Foundation will give priority to projects of access to food affordable and healthy for low-income communities; affordability through community financing efforts to reduce the financial burden on low-income communities; Availability in the food supply chain that lead to the creation of new jobs and businesses; and Resilience for low-income communities to effectively prepare for and respond to food security disruptions at critical times.
