PFor many, Covid-19 is history, but in reality this disease is still present three years after its arrival in Venezuela, on March 13, 2020.

“The pandemic is not over yet,” warned Jarbas Barbosa, director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), during his most recent press conference.

Until this Monday, the country accumulated 552,225 confirmed cases, of which 390 are active and 545,981 people have recovered, according to government information. But for the vice president of the Venezuelan Society of Infectious Diseases, Patricia Valenzuela, there is no certainty of these reports.

“Underreporting in this type of process always persists. As of a week or two ago, transmission has decreased a bit, but there are still cases. Until approximately two weeks ago, the weekly sum of cases in the world was one million cases, ”he said.

Vaccination coverage, according to PAHO data, remains at 49.8% of the population with a complete immunization schedule. This shows the number of people who received the last recommended dose of any vaccine (including boosters). There are still a certain number of people (more than 600,000) who are maintained with only two doses, reported CrónicaUno.

Another piece of information that shows the underreporting in Venezuela: the World Health Organization (WHO) calculated some 22,325 deaths associated with Covid-19 in the country until December 2021. For that date, the figures from the Nicolás Maduro administration only admitted 5,328 accumulated deaths. Today they report a total of 5,854 deaths.

At the beginning of the year, the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee issued a report recalling that the pandemic remains a public emergency of international concern.

The WHO recognizes “pandemic fatigue”, which is reflected in the drastic reduction of prevention measures for about a year. One of the first changes was observed in how little by little the use of the mask in public and closed spaces was reduced.

Despite this, the WHO recalls that Covid-19 still represents a significant risk for cardiovascular, neurological, respiratory, and metabolic problems after infection.
