MIP invites their parents to breakfast with the first payment of their scholarship

by time news
  • According to current estimates, a MIP receives a monthly scholarship of 1,870 pesos.
  • The figure is minimal and is not even enough to cover basic needs such as food and transportation.
  • Despite constant complaints, there has not been a substantial increase in the amount that all medical students receive during their training.

The road that all those interested in being health professionals must face is too complex. It is not only about the sacrifices that must be made but also about the rickety supports. only the Undergraduate Internal Physicians (MIP), who must work long hours during their rotations in hospitals, receive a scholarship that is not even enough to pay their transportation expenses.

With this in mind, in order to graduate from the university it is necessary to meet several mandatory requirements. Among them is performing 12 months of permanent work in a hospital. This stage takes place in the penultimate year of the degree and has the objective of putting into practice all the theory learned in the classroom.

Now, the central point of the discussion is related to the treatment received by young people. Although they must fulfill some functions of a health worker, they are not provided with a salary in any way. In fact the amount of the scholarship that each MIP receives is mocked because it is one of the smallest in the educational field in the country.

At least until 2020, the amount of monthly financial support for each student was 1,870. Despite constant criticism, the figure has not had a significant increase and it is one of the many injustices faced by those interested in becoming doctors.

On the other hand, each student is free to use the financial aid in the way they want. All of the above leads to a thought-provoking story. Everything was generated from a publication of Ana Carolina Sepulvedawho is a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the UNAM and President of the Board of Directors of the IMSS Foundation.

Through Twitter, she published that her daughter is MIP and with the payment of the first scholarship she received, she decided to invite her entire family to breakfast. He even accompanied his post with some photos of the dishes they ate.

He immediately received various comments in response. While some congratulated her, others questioned whether a student could really buy so much if the current meager amounts are taken into account.

What types of financial incentives do medical students receive during their training?

The Observatory of Medical Education and Human Rights (OBEME), belonging to the Universidad Veracruzana (UV), carried out a study on the subject. Based on public information from the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) and the Ministry of Health (SSa), it identified the salary that a doctor currently receives.

An interesting aspect is that it not only focused on professional doctors but also covers the formative part. The investigation shows everything from the “scholarship” received by young people who have not yet finished their studies to those who are specialists in the public sector. The following table shows the monthly financial compensation offered in each area.

  • Undergraduate Internal Physician (MIP) – 1,870
  • Intern “C” – 3.673
  • Resident (1st. Year) – 5,096
  • Resident (3rd Year) – 5,635
  • Basic general practitioner – 7,941
  • Specialist doctor – 10,459

And in your case, do you remember what you did with the first payment of the scholarship you received when you were MIP?
