Proposal on Ethereum seeks to speed up withdrawals in rollups

CriptoFácil – A new proposal can speed up withdrawals in network rollups (EIP). Ed Felten, co-founder of OffChain Labs and developer of Arbitrum, proposed that the seven-day period to verify the validity of transactions in rollups could be shortened in many cases.

Felten believes that the challenge period should only be used when transactions are uncertain. According to Felten, with proof-of-stake (PoS), some censorship is more detectable than before, allowing easier identification of dishonest actions in rollups.

Also according to the developer, this makes it possible to skip the transaction verification period in many cases. To do so, Felten suggests building a “censorship oracle” in a smart contract, which would indicate whether or not there was censorship in the last X blocks reliably.

Only in case there are no conclusions, the current deadline for contestation, which is seven days, would be applied. Felten detailed that there are two types of censorship that can occur in rollups: block building and forking.

Solutions for Ethereum

Block building censorship occurs when block creators refuse to include certain transactions in their blocks. Fork censorship occurs when validators conspire to split the blockchain so that blocks containing certain transactions are removed and do not become part of the main blockchain.

Felten believes that fork censorship is the main reason for the seven-day period used today. Felten explains that fork censorship leaves detectable effects on Ethereum, as it works using the proof-of-stake algorithm, and the fork blocks will appear as empty spaces in the consensus.

In this way, a smart contract can be used to detect the number of empty spaces in a range by comparing the change in block number with the number of spaces.

Currently, optimistic-type rollups are based on the presumption that the transactions they include are valid. If not, invalidity must be proved, leaving a dispute period in which proof of fraud can be created while funds remain blocked.

Felten’s new proposal can reduce the time needed for transaction validation, making optimistic rollups more efficient and allowing for broader use of this solution on the Ethereum network.
