Theaters are reactivating after the Covid crisis. Some of the films, big and small, received good audience support. When people return to the theaters, Kannan Thamarakkulam has come up with a different theme for the film ‘Udumbu’. Kannan Thamarakkulam’s new style of storytelling and making style is different from his previous films. Senthil Krishna, who got attention through ‘Chalakudikkaran Changathi’, plays the central character Ani in the film. As hinted at in the trailer, the action thriller film deals with a topic of contemporary relevance.

Though Malayalam cinema has witnessed goonda gatherings, quotations and slum clashes over the years, ‘Udumba’ captivates the audience with its excellent presentation and dynamic action scenes. The film revolves around the lives of ‘Simit Ani’ and his leader Bharathan. The film manages to keep the audience together as the first half of Revenge, Love and Family all unfolds. Senthil Krishna’s best character in his career is Udumb Ani alias Simit Ani. Senthil Krishna has made good use of the moments to fully bring out his acting prowess. Harish Perady, Alanzier and Sajal Sudarshan are also in the cast for the first time. The director has succeeded in capturing the audience without the usual commotion of crime thriller films but keeping the suspense accurate. Actor Sajal, who played the role of Jitesh, and Angelina, who played the lead role of Hima, have done well in the film.

The director has made the film with emphasis on the emotions of the individuals. Therefore, Udumba shifts gears to the style of a family emotional drama film. All the main characters in the film are cast in gray shades. The director has interestingly portrayed the growth of many characters as the story progresses. Newcomers Aneesh Sahadevan and Sreejith Sasidharan have penned the script for the film. The film stars Angelina Jolie and Yami Sona in the lead roles.

The film also stars Manjraj, Mohammad Faisal, VK Baiju, Jibin Sahib, NM Badusha, Eldo TT and Shreya Iyer. Ravichandran is the cinematographer. Photography, background music and editing strongly support the dynamic storyline. The background music by Sanand George Grace keeps the film engaging. ‘Udumba’ is notable for its innovative storyline without presenting the usual clichd views of quotation films.
