Watan Al-Youm: A senior Israeli expert warned of the inability of the government and local authorities to prepare for the major earthquake that is expected to hit the region in the coming months.
Matanyahu Engelman, Israel’s state comptroller, explained in the report that despite previous warnings, the Ministry of Construction and Housing did not complete the consolidation of 1,124 buildings requiring immediate intervention specifically in the cities most at risk of damage from the earthquake.
This figure represents 93% of the buildings that have been referred to in the past as “buildings likely to collapse”.
The Israeli expert pointed out that Israel is located near the Syrian-African side, and therefore the risk of a major earthquake increases every year.
He said that there is a high probability that a strong earthquake will occur during the next fifty years in the area between southern Lebanon and the southern Dead Sea.
He also called on the government to act quickly, “given the large budget resources needed to strengthen buildings and infrastructure in remote towns, most of which are of low socio-economic status, the commitment of all professional parties and the appropriate allocation of resources is necessary.”
In addition, the Dutch seismologist, Frank Hogrebits, revealed, on Sunday, in a tweet on the “Twitter” website, the date of major seismic activity in the coming days.
Hogrebits said that we are on a date with what he called “the convergence of planetary geometry” from March 15 to 17, which means that we will witness significant seismic activity approximately between March 16 and 19.
