What was an open secret is now official: Gianni Infantino, re-elected FIFA president. The act took place at the Annual Congress held in Kigali (Rwanda). The Swiss did not face any other candidate, so he will continue until 2027. This will be his second term and, therefore, he will be eligible for a third term until 2031.
“I remember when I came to Rwanda for the first time. They told me: “We love you very much, but we are not going to vote for FIFA president.” So I went by recommendation to the Genocide memorial and saw what this town had been capable of, how it had rebuilt itself after that. Fortunately, later, in my case, I was also able to overcome it and be elected president.”Infantino said.
Infantino is the ninth president of the FIFAafter his time as Secretary General of the UEFAon February 26, 2016, in the elections held after the corruption scandal that ended the 18-year term of Joseph Blatter.
Then he defeated in the second ballot, with 115 votes against 88, the sheikh of Baréin Salman bin Ibrahim al Khalifa. In the first consultation, Jordanian was ruled out Ali Bin Al Hussein and the French Jerome Champagne. On June 5, 2019, Infantino was re-elected as the sole candidate by acclamation, the same as today.
