Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on the 16th that “the leaders of South Korea and Japan agreed to resume ‘shuttle diplomacy’ without being bound by formalities.”
Prime Minister Kishida said at the opening remarks at the Korea-Japan expanded summit held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tokyo that afternoon, “I am delighted that the opportunity to open a new chapter in Korea-Japan relations has come together.”
It is reported that President Yoon Seok-yeol and Prime Minister Kishida agreed to resume shuttle diplomacy in which the leaders of the two countries visit each other on a regular basis at the Korea-Japan summit, which was attended by only a small number of people.
Prime Minister Kishida said that at the expanded summit, they would exchange opinions on how to strengthen intergovernmental communication in various fields such as politics, economy, and culture for bilateral cooperation between Korea and Japan.
In addition, Prime Minister Kishida criticized North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch this morning as a “serious act of provocation” and added that he would also discuss ways to further strengthen cooperation between South Korea and Japan as well as between Korea and the US and Japan in this situation.
In addition, Prime Minister Kishida announced that he would resume security talks between Korea and Japan, which had been suspended for a long time, as soon as possible and launch a new economic security consultative body.
He positively evaluated the solution to forced labor announced by the Korean government on the 6th, and said that he would inherit the historical awareness of previous Japanese cabinets, including the 1998 ‘Kim Dae-jung-Obuchi Declaration’.
