Republican Senator Tom Cruise sees nothing wrong with the term “illegal alien” (literally – “illegal alien”).
Unhappy that the Library of Congress intends to abandon that definition, Texas Cruise, along with Indiana Republican Senator Mike Brown, sent a five-page letter to Library Director Carla Hayden accusing the institution of “introducing politically motivated changes” them terminology.
The Library previously announced that it is going to change the names of some of the indexes in its catalogs – in particular, replacing “illegal aliens” and “aliens” with “noncitizens” or “illegal immigrants”.
“This replacement is nothing more than a politically motivated attempt to manipulate the language,” the letter says. “It has nothing to do with the original Congressional instructions, which required the library to use generally accepted terminology to refer to the relevant abstract content. Such actions are not only a question of linguistic culture, but also of linguistic practice, since the old terms have been included in many library materials, and it will be easier to find the necessary information using the old terminology. “
A spokesperson for the library said the old terms will be retained for cross-referencing. The new terms are “broader in nature” and will allow users to find the library materials they need, regardless of the terms used at different times, he stressed.
