The Gamaleya Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology received a sample of the omicron strain from Russians who had previously identified this mutation of the coronavirus, said the head of the organization, Alexander Gintsburg, RIA Novosti reports.
“We have isolated the omicron from our infected who came from abroad. Our specialists went to the hospital where the patients are, took smears and sequenced them, ”he explained.
On December 3, before the first cases of infection with the omicron strain were detected in Russia, the country sent requests for samples of the mutation to the countries where it had already been found. Three days later, the omicron strain was also detected in Russia. It was infected by two citizens who flew from South Africa, upon arrival they were placed in an observatory. The head of the Ministry of Health, Mikhail Murashko, reported that both infected Russians tolerate the disease easily.

At the same time, Rospotrebnadzor clarified that there are still two infected with this variant of the virus in Russia, but four sequences of the RNA virus nucleotides were obtained from them.
