Arched constructions called ‘arch decoration’ in ancient houses are still built today.
Weight bearing arch
It is used in the entrance, window, walls forming the interior of the rooms. The arch supports the weight of the roof above the structure. Before the weight-bearing ‘arch’ system, the structural weight-bearing columns and beams were placed above the openings in the wall. But, it bends and cracks at the bottom and breaks. And so ‘Arch’ came into being. It is built with brick, concrete, wood and steel.
Segmental Arch
A structure less than a semicircle is called a segmental arch. This means that the beam will be slightly curved as an alternative to the structure. It is weight bearing and looks good.
Semi-circular arch
This type of arch is semi-circular and its center point is exactly in the middle of its total width. It is important that the base of this type of arch placed on the wall is in a perfectly horizontal straight line.
Horseshoe arch
The structure is called Horseshoe Arch due to its shape, which is slightly more than a semi-circular arch. The usual methods of arch construction will be followed. This form is popular among architectural styles.
Pointed arch
This type is notable for its semi-circular decorative arch arrangement. As the name suggests the top center is sharp. This can be seen in Mughal architecture. This way the ‘arch’ area will have extra space.
Venetian Arch
In this the inner and outer curve of the arch is not the same. That means the top is pointed and the bottom is curved.
Apart from the above, there are ‘Florentine Arch’, ‘Relieving Arch’, ‘Stilted Arch’, ‘Semi Elliptical Arch’.
