Kottayam: Former Archbishop of Changanassery Archdiocese Mar Joseph Pauvathil (93) passed away. He was being treated for age-related diseases. He died at Changanassery Private Hospital around 1.17 pm.

He was born on August 14, 1930 in an ancient Pauvathil family in Kurumbanadam Assumption Parish in Changanassery Archdiocese. Parents are Appachan-Mariyakutty couple in Pauvam. He was ordained a priest on October 3, 1962.

On January 29, 1972, he was appointed as the Auxiliary Bishop of Changanassery Archdiocese. On February 13, 1972, she was canonized by Pope Paul VI in Rome. He was appointed as the assistant bishop of Archbishop Mar Anthony Padiera. On February 26, 1977, when the diocese of Kanjirapalli was established, he was appointed as the first bishop of the diocese. Inauguration on May 12, 1977.

Mar Anthony Padiyara was appointed as the Archbishop of Changanassery on 5 November 1985 following his appointment as the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church. Inauguration on 17th January 1986. For 22 years, he worked for the all-round growth of Changanassery Archdiocese and was a visionary Acharya of Mar Pauvathil Church. The church fathers refer to Mar Pavwatil as the Crown of the Church.

He was the President of KCBC from 1993 to 1996 and the President of CBCI from 1994 to 1998. On March 19, 2007, Mar Joseph Pauvat retired.
