These are the contemporary Japanese artists whose works are displayed in the spectacular exhibition “Good Morning Japan”.

The most intriguing and thought-provoking works in the contemporary art world are made in Japan. In the works, which draw inspiration from the cultures of comics (manga), animation (anime) and cute Japanese pop (kawaii), innovation, boldness and current ideas correspond with techniques from the past and with traditions from the past to create a versatile and fascinating field.

In the exhibition “Good Morning Japan” the works of eight artists and two artists are presented. Her colorful raw figures of Misaki kawaii Contrasted with the mysterious and childish hybrid creations of Maiko Kobayashi – Doubt-human and doubt-animal creatures, which transmit sadness, joy, fear and melancholy at the same time.

Beside them, the open-eyed androgynous portraits of Hideaki Kawashima, which demonstrate a spectrum of emotions, from fear, through passion to longing and longing. In his work one can recognize echoes of a rich figurative heritage with touches of manga and anime, influences that are also evident in the images of the “girls” in the work of Mapo Oda And in the faces and figures of Cog‘Yoro Matsumoto.

Hideaki Kawashima, V-neck 2014, courtesy of the artistMasako Miki Adhered to the traditions of her ancestors, especially the Shinto system of belief and worship and traditional Japanese folklore. Her large-scale felt sculptures are based on shape-shifting spirits (youkai), who can disguise themselves in a variety of forms.

The exhibition also presents a new body of works on paper, the work of the renowned artist C‘Yaharu Shiotaas well as a unique statue of Yayoi Kusamawhose extensive retrospective exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in 2021 is what gave birth to the idea to present in Tel Aviv a wide range of works from the contemporary Japanese art scene.
