The United Nations Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) announces that it has taken in 95 children at its base in Sake, in the territory of Masisi (North Kivu). 50 of these children come from an orphanage. They were transferred to a center in Goma.

This area was marked last weekend by fighting between the Army and M23 fighters.

Four civilians lost their lives and at least five others were injured in these clashes. The Blue Helmets provided medical aid to the wounded at their base and later evacuated them to Goma.

For context, Burundian troops are now positioned in Sake. This deployment is part of the implementation of the directives of the 20th Extraordinary Summit of EAC Heads of State, which was held on February 4, 2023 in Nairobi (Kenya) and the mini-summit on the peace and security in the eastern DRC organized on the sidelines of the 36th summit of the African Union, on February 17, 2023, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
