Completion of Legislation Amending Judge Selection Committee Anticipated by Coalition Leaders Before Session Ends

The coalition leaders have confirmed that amendments to the committee for the selection of judges will be completed before the end of the session. A discussion lasting several hours resulted in several decisions that will be presented to the factions for approval. The legislation to amend the composition of the committee for the selection of judges will be completed before Passover, to bring about a significant change to the committee, including the removal of the automatic veto on judges. The legislative articles for legal reform will be submitted for approval at the beginning of the summer session. The coalition leaders invite the opposition to engage in negotiations during the month-long recess to reach a mutual understanding. They express their appreciation for Minister of Justice MK Yariv Levin and Chairman of the Constitutional Law and Jurisprudence Committee MK Simcha Rothman for their hard work.

The heads of the coalition clarified that “the legislation to amend the committee for the selection of judges will be completed by the end of the session.”

At the end of a discussion that lasted for several hours, the heads of the coalition parties decided on the following decisions that will be brought to the approval of the factions:

1 – The amendment legislation regarding the composition of the Committee for the Selection of Judges will be completed by the end of the current session, before Passover, based on the composition presented today in the Constitution Committee.

The proposal that will be submitted for approval will bring about a historic and substantial change in the Committee for the Selection of Judges:

Correcting a historical injustice: for the first time, the automatic veto of the judges in the committee for the selection of judges will be canceled so that balance and diversity in the composition of the Supreme Court will be possible. The representatives of the Bar Association left the committee.

2 – The rest of the legislative articles of the legal reform will be submitted for approval at the beginning of the summer session of the Knesset, at the end of the recess.

3 – The heads of the coalition parties call on the opposition to take advantage of the month-long recess period, during which the legislative procedures in the Knesset cannot be held, in order to hold real negotiations in order to reach an understanding regarding the articles of legislation that will be submitted for approval after the recess.

4 – We extend a hand to everyone who really cares about the unity of the people and the desire to reach an agreed settlement.
