Justice ministers talk in London about extra support for ICC

One of the topics on the agenda, according to the Dutch Ministry of Justice, is the collection of evidence in Ukraine for war crimes. The Netherlands has already contributed to this in the form of research teams from the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee. Minister Yesilgöz says he wants to provide more support together with other countries. Ministers from Europe are mainly present, but they come from all over the world. The chief prosecutor of the ICC Karim Khan and representatives of the Ukrainian government will also speak.

“The United Kingdom, together with the rest of the international community, will provide the International Criminal Court with the money, people and expertise necessary to ensure that justice is done,” UK Secretary of State Raab said in a written statement.

The Ukrainians deserve that too, adds Minister Yesilgöz. “The Ukrainians have shown more than once that they have the last word on their future. They may be hardened, but never broken. They may be angry and frustrated, but never defeated.”

On Friday, the ICC announced that an arrest warrant had been issued for Russian President Vladimir Putin and senior Russian government official Maria Lvova-Belova. According to the ICC, they may have committed war crimes by deporting children from Ukraine. Many of the children were said to have been taken to Russia. The ICC has been investigating possible war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in Ukraine for a year since November 21, 2013.

The International Criminal Court is located in The Hague. Russia does not recognize it.
