It seems to be an increasing problem: High myopia, or strong nearsightedness. Our changing lifestyle is largely to blame for this.

The nearsightedness of the population is increasing. Nearsightedness occurs in 25%, 33% and 50% of the population in the sixties, forties and twenties respectively. In Asian countries, the percentages are even higher: In China, 90% of teenagers and young adults now have a myopia that needs to be corrected.

Myopia is partly hereditary; parents with myopia have a good chance that their children will also develop some degree of nearsightedness. In addition, there are children whose eyes grow too long, so that the natural farsightedness they have at birth overshoots into nearsightedness.

But above all, myopia is now associated with intensive focusing at close range, such as when using a smartphone, tablet, TV or computer. This also explains why strong myopia is increasing so dramatically, especially in children. Spending more time outdoors reduces the risk of developing myopia. So enjoy playing outside!

Children often do not realize that they see less well, so it is advisable to have your child’s eyes tested by an expert optician or optometrist. When the myopia is neglected, a child can more easily suffer from other eye problems later in life.

So feel free to make an appointment for an eye check, so we can quickly discover whether your child is developing myopia. And if that is the case, we at Jan Brinkmans Opticien – Optometrist can help your child with the right advice. In addition, with our wide selection of nice glasses, we also offer a solution with which the blackboard is sharp again.
