Collins was born in Rome, as his father at the time had a military post at the US embassy in Italy. It has often been nicknamed “The forgotten astronaut” because unlike Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, he never walked on the moon but in the historic 1969 mission he remained at the controls of the lunar module, revolving around them. Collins is the second Apollo 11 astronaut who disappears. Armstrong died in 2012, while Aldrin is 91 today.

On 22 April, on the occasion of Earth Day, he wrote on his Twitter profile: «I am sure that, if everyone could see the Earth floating just outside their windows, every day would be Earth Day. There are few more fragile or more beautiful things on Earth, we work together today and every day to protect our home ».
