Manchester: The World Athletics Council has banned transgender women from competing in the women’s category in international competitions. Lord Coe, president of the World Athletics Council, said that from March 31, any transgender athlete who has reached the age of majority will not be allowed to compete in women’s categories. Lord Coe also stated that a detailed study will be conducted to come up with guidelines on eligibility criteria for transgender athletes. Lord Coe clarified on Thursday that he does not say no all the time.

Under the existing rules, trans athletes were allowed to compete in the women’s category if their blood testosterone levels remained below 5 in a row in the 12 months prior to competition. Lord Coe explained that the decision was based on the general principle of protecting women. Lord Coe added that there are currently no transgender athletes competing at the international level in the sport.

The World Athletics Council has also called for lower blood testosterone levels. The council also clarified that this limit should continue for two years before competing in the women’s category at the international level in any track and field events. As per the earlier regulations, the competition was limited to 400 meters to one mile. The council also decided to introduce interim conditions for the players who had competed earlier.
