The G7 member states call on Russia and Ukraine to return to the negotiating table to resolve the conflict between the two countries. Despite the tense situation, everything possible must be done to resume the dialogue, Germany’s new foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, told reporters on the sidelines of the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Liverpool on Saturday 11 December.

Berbock, in particular, pointed to the possibility of a meeting in the “Normandy format” with the participation of Russia, Ukraine, France, and Germany. “The invitation to this meeting has been on the table for several weeks, for several months,” she said. Another channel of interaction, according to Berbock, could be the NATO-Russia Council.

According to the Foreign Minister of Germany, the negotiations should lead to a decrease in tension on the Russian-Ukrainian border. At the same time, the G7 countries agree that “there can be no change in borders in Europe,” Berbock added. “All G7 members have a clear common position that crossing this line will have enormous political and economic consequences,” she said.

Common values

At the end of the year, Germany will replace Britain as chair of the G7, which also includes Italy, Canada, the United States, France and Japan.

Berbock, for whom this summit is the first in the post of Foreign Minister of Germany, stressed that the G7 is a group of “the most powerful democratic states from an economic point of view,” which “do not work against someone, but stand for something.” At the heart of this cooperation, she said, “is a common understanding of the global economy, which is based on values such as democracy, the rule of law and human rights.
