Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has suffered a second severe shock in two days. On March 23, a Surat court convicted him in a defamation case and sentenced him to two years in prison, and today the Lok Sabha Secretariat issued a notification to revoke his parliamentary membership.
It may be mentioned that Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to two years by the Surat Sessions Court on Thursday and fined Rs 15,000 in the case of objectionable comment on ‘Modi’ sirname (surname). Ever since the conviction, it was being said that Rahul Gandhi’s membership could end at any time. According to media reports, the process of disqualifying Rahul Gandhi from the House started only after the court’s decision and the action has been taken immediately.
Actually, according to the rules, any Member of Parliament or Member of Assembly has to lose membership after receiving a sentence of two years or more. When Rahul Gandhi elected from Kerala’s Wayanad parliamentary seat was sentenced to two years by the Sessions Court in Surat, there were fears of action under the same code. Finally, the Lok Sabha Speaker took the decision to terminate Rahul Gandhi’s Lok Sabha membership on Friday.
Now the Congress has come out with a strong reaction on this issue. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has said that the BJP tried all ways to disqualify him (Rahul Gandhi). He (Rahul Gandhi) does not want to keep whatever truth he is speaking but we will continue to speak the truth. We will continue to demand JPC, if necessary we will go to jail to save democracy
