Born on 1 January 1953 in Jambur village of Gujarat (Gir), Hirabai lost her parents at a very young age.

She was brought up by her grandmother, but she never went to school or college, and then when she was 14, she was married to Ibrahim Bhai Lobby. After marriage, she along with her husband used to earn a living by cultivating a small piece of land.

Hirabai belongs to the Siddi community, which constitutes 98 per cent of the total population of Jambur. Actually Siddi is an African tribe, who were brought to India as slaves about 400 years ago by the ruler of Junagadh. One of the most backward communities in Gujarat, the people of the Siddi tribe lived in extreme poverty for decades. No one ever thought about their rise. But Hirabai decided to change the circumstances of her community.
