The cost for the initial survey work to establish a new sub-town in Mamallapuram, Chengalpattu District is estimated at Rs.2 crores. The recommendation to establish new sub-cities outside of the crowded areas of Chennai was made in the second comprehensive plan of the CMDA in 2008, however, a final decision was not made on the boundary expansion and the work was stalled. Currently, the CMDA has accelerated the establishment of sub-cities, with five new sub-cities approved by the government. In the Governor’s speech in the Assembly, it was announced that a new sub-city would be established near Mamallapuram, and the Housing and Urban Development Department has increased its follow-up activities. Officials have allocated Rs.2 crore for the area study, and a notification is scheduled for release in July. Potential areas for the new sub-city include Mamallapuram, Thirukkalukkunram, and the East Coast Road. Private participation could provide housing opportunities for many people, but it is the government’s responsibility to improve basic facilities for the sub-city’s success.

The basic survey work for setting up a new sub-town in Mamallapuram, Chengalpattu District, is to be carried out at an estimated cost of Rs.2 crores.

Crowding in Chennai is increasing. Thus, it was recommended in the second comprehensive plan of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Corporation (CMDA) that new sub-cities should be established outside the main part of the city.

Although a recommendation for this was made last, in 2008, the CMDA did not take a final decision on the boundary expansion, so the sub-city work was stalled. Currently, the CMDA has accelerated the work related to the establishment of sub-cities. According to this, the government approved the establishment of new sub-cities at five places namely Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Tirumashisai and Meenjoor. The works for this are going on.

In the Governor’s speech in the Assembly, it was announced that ‘a new sub-city will be established near Mamallapuram’.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development has stepped up its follow-up activities.

Officials said that an amount of Rs 2 crore has been allocated to study the area where a new sub-city is to be built.

An official notification regarding the subsidiary city is scheduled to be released in July.

It has been revealed that areas near Mamallapuram, Thirukkalukkunram, along the East Coast Road will be selected for this purpose.

Private contribution?

If the sub-city gives due opportunity to private participation in the project, housing will be available to a large number of people. In order to improve the basic facilities, the government should undertake the work for this. Only then will the sub city project succeed.
