Austin Tamil School’s pre-kindergarten program

by time news

In the year 2012 in Austin, the capital city of the state of Texas in the United States, a Tamil class was started at Sukanthi’s home with 5 children. Then Sukandhi himself would search for all the textbooks on the internet and bring them to take the class.

Then in 2013, Mahendran and Anbu, together with Sukanti, tried to start this Tamil class as a non-profit organization for the benefit of all Tamil people of Austin and named it Austin Tamil School, registered and started with 100 students. One of the most special things is that all the teachers working in this school are 100 percent volunteers.

Students studying in the United States are required to earn foreign language credit during their middle (grades 6-9) and high school (grades 9-12). Most of them usually study French and Spanish and buy only credit for it.

It was only then that the Austin Tamil School administration got an idea. That idea is why we should not establish recognition of Tamil language among American schools and give Tamil credit to students studying Tamil. They immediately started researching what to do about it and worked with a 3rd party agency called Cognia to make Austin Tamil School an accredited school and successfully announced it as an accredited school in March-2018. Through this, Tamil school students are able to acquire knowledge of Tamil language when they go to high school.

Austin Tamil School currently has 250 students, 33 teachers and 14 junior volunteers. Also an annual function is held in this school every year. In these programs students from each class will perform on stage based on the Tamil knowledge they have learned. This year also on March-11, the program started off with Tamil Mother Greetings.
