The European Commission announced this Saturday, March 25, an agreement for Germany to lift the last minute veto to the legislation negotiated and agreed so that, from 2035, only cars that do not emit CO2 are sold in the EU.

The agreement was announced this morning on twitter by Frans Timmermans, vice-president of the Commission, responsible for the European Green Deal.

Germany, with the support of other countries, was blocking the future legislation that prohibits the European Union, from 2035, the sale of cars that emit CO2, that is vehicles with a combustion engine.

It is a fundamental piece for the European Union to achieve its climate goals. The agreement now reached between Brussels and Berlin, about which there is still little information, could involve the use of electrofuels.

Either way, the impasse is broken. Vice-President Frans Timmermans says the Commission will now work towards having regulations on the CO2 standard for cars adopted as quickly as possible.
