The EU threatens sanctions if Belarus deploys a Russian nuke

The European Union threatens new sanctions on Belarus if the country bordering Russia places a Russian nuke there. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry accused Russia of violating its commitments, and of undermining “the architecture of nuclear disarmament and the international security system in general”

The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Joseph Borrell, said that Brussels is ready to impose new sanctions on Belarus if Minsk places Russian nuclear weapons there. “If Belarus places a Russian nuclear weapon, it means an irresponsible escalation and a threat to European security. Belarus can still stop it, it’s their choice. The EU is ready to respond with additional sanctions,” he tweeted.

As you remember, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced last Saturday that his country will place tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. Putin said the placement of the nuclear weapons is similar to moves made by the US, which stores such weapons in bases across Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry accused Russia of violating its commitments, and undermining “the architecture of nuclear disarmament and the international security system in general.” Ukraine called on “all members of the international community to convey to Putin’s criminal regime the inadmissibility of his latest nuclear provocations.” In an interview broadcast on Saturday, Putin said that the move to deploy tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus “is not unusual.”
