Bozze Karlsson warned the school staff to keep children inside after encountering a wolf. When asked if it was a dog, he confirmed it was not and that the wolf was within reach. Arboga municipality took precautions and kept children indoors until lunchtime. The wolf then went further northeast and a DNA sample was collected to determine if it was a newcomer to the area. Bozze Karlsson saw a wild wolf up close for the first time and commented on its appearance. The clip below shows the wolf running around Arboga.

After the encounter with the wolf, he warned the staff at the school to keep the children inside. They asked if it was a dog he had seen.

– No, it’s not a dog. But it was so close that I could almost pet it, says Bozze Karlsson.

Arboga municipality took several measures and schools and preschools kept the children indoors until lunchtime. The wolf disappeared from Arboga and wandered further towards the northeast, according to Daniel Mallwitz, wildlife officer at the County Administrative Board in Västmanland.

Could have gone wrong

The County Administrative Board collected a DNA sample from the wolf that will be sent for analysis and hopes to receive an answer later this week.

– We suspect that it is a wolf that has never been in this area, because if it had known what the landscape looks like, it would never have ended up there, says Daniel Mallwitz.

For Bozze Karlsson, it was the first time he had seen a wolf so close in the wild.

– I don’t think the wolf was fully grown. It was so matted and dirty, it must have run a lot, says Bozze.
