Recently, Chennai Corporation held a meeting to discuss the budget and passed several resolutions. Property tax is the main source of revenue for the Corporation, and at the beginning of the current half, there is an outstanding balance of Rs. 674.27 crore. Property owners who have arrears for more than five years can request a special tax concession of 20% on payment of the entire outstanding property tax within three months. The meeting also discussed various resolutions, including renaming Avai Shanmugam Road to ‘VP Raman Road.’ During the meeting, Viswanathan proposed increasing the councilors’ ward development fund to Rs.70 lakh on the occasion of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s 70th birthday. However, Mayor R. Priya emphasized that councilors must not blame officials for issues and work with them instead.

Property tax arrears

A debate on the budget will follow on Tuesday in the conference room of the Ribbon House building. In this meeting the resolutions were passed after the discussion of the members on the budget. Accordingly, property tax is the main source of revenue for Chennai Corporation. At the beginning of the current 2nd half, the outstanding amount of property tax is Rs.674.27 crore. The outstanding balance of 44,436 property owners over 10 years is Rs.245.31 crore.

Therefore, property owners who have property tax arrears for more than 5 years can request the Tamil Nadu government to issue an ordinance to provide a special tax concession of 20 percent on payment of the entire outstanding property tax within a period of 3 months.

66 Resolutions

On Avai Shanmugam Road, which is the main road connecting Marina Beach Kamarajar Road and Anna Road, 66 resolutions have been passed, including renaming the road section from Marina Beach Kamarajar Road to Indian Bank Head Office as ‘VP Raman Road’.

Councilor Ward Development Fund

Speaking earlier, Chennai Standing Committee Chairman (Education) Viswanathan said, ‘Just as health and education have been given importance in the Tamil Nadu budget, more funds have been allocated for education in the Chennai Corporation budget. On the occasion of Chief Minister M.K.Stalin’s 70th birthday, the councilors’ ward development fund should be increased to Rs.70 lakh. During the last ADMK regime, the parks and swimming pools in 200 wards in Chennai were leased by a single contractor. As a result, the corporation has received a compensation of Rs. 3 crores 27 lakhs 24 thousand. He said that they should find the official who supported them in the previous regime and collect the compensation through him.

Responding to this, Deputy Mayor Mahesh Kumar said that if a complaint is made in writing to the Commissioner, action will be taken. Viswanathan, I have already written a complaint to the mayor and the commissioner. You have to recover the loss incurred by the corporation. He said that in the coming times, anyone should give contract for only one or 2 parks to a contractor. Responding to that, Mayor R. Priya said that the Chennai Corporation should work together as officers and councillors.
