Attack on Ismaili Center in Lisbon leaves two dead and several injured

A knife attack at a Muslim cultural center in Lisbon, Portugal, this Tuesday, 28, left two people dead and several others injured.

According to the police, a man, of Afghan origin, invaded the Ismaili Center and stabbed people inside.

Afterwards, he was shot by the police and underwent surgery for being hit in the foot.

Around the Ismaili Center there are several dozen operatives from the Special Police Unit, the Public Security Police and the National Counter-Terrorism Unit of the Judiciary Police.

The Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, said that it was not yet known whether the attack was a terrorist attack.

“But everything points to an isolated act”, said Costa.

In a note, the President of the Republic “presented to the representative of the Ismaili Imamat in Lisbon, Nazim Ahmad, sincere condolences for the criminal act that took place today at the Ismaili Center in Lisbon” and requested that he “also convey them to Prince Aga Kahn and the families of the victims” .

Party leaders of all persuasions condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with the victims.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far on the center frequented by Ismailis, a minority Shiite group that has been targeted in countries including Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Ismaili Center is the supranational body representing the Ismailis, a minority branch of Shiism that has the Aga Khan IV as its spiritual leader.

In addition to religion, the center is dedicated to teaching and integrating refugees.
