Matías Tolsà and Beatriz Costo win the I Press Illustration contest of the ABC Museum

The ABC Collection Foundation, resuming its cultural activities and with the aim of promoting illustration and supporting the development of illustrators, convened the I ABC Museum Press Illustration Contest. In this first edition it established two modalities, cover and caricature, and in successive editions it will propose other areas of press illustration such as humorous cartoons, illustration of articles, etc.

And jury, made up of José Bonifacio Bermejo, from the General Directorate of Libraries, Archives and Museums; Carla Berrocal and Javier Olivares, professional illustrators; Inmaculada Corcho, director of the ABC Museum, and Javier Díaz-Guardiola, Art Coordinator of ABC Cultural, decided that the winner in the cartoon category should be Matías Tolsà Montedoro for the work ‘Elizabeth II’, while the second prize went to David García Vivancos for the work ‘Mario Draghi’. In the cover category, the winner was Beatriz Costo Cámara for the work ‘Russians against the war’ and second prize went to Cintia Arribas Rodríguez for the work ‘Sofá y manta’. The winners in each category are endowed with 1,000 euros each, and the runners-up, with 500 euros each. The winning works remain in the possession of the Fundación Colección ABC and become part of its funds.

Matías Tolsa He is an illustrator, cartoonist, cartoonist and graphic designer. He trained at the Llotja School of Design and Art in Barcelona. His illustrations have been published in media such as ‘El Jueves’, ‘El Triangle’, ‘La Directa’, ‘Web Negre’ and TV3. He has illustrated the novel ‘Ikatú and the raised city’ (Milenio). In 2022 he published with ten of the best caricaturists of the Spanish press ‘Caricaturists by profession’ (Nordic). This year he has received the World Press Cartoon Grand Prix.

Beatrice Cost is a graphic designer and illustrator living in Madrid. Trained in Psychology and Graphic Design, she works as an independent designer and illustrator and in collaboration with different studios and publishers, including Estudio Pep Carrió and Tau Estudio o Planeta. She has participated in a wide variety of projects, both visual identity and editorial design, oriented above all to the cultural sector.
