The Bombay High Court has rejected Mamata Banerjee’s plea to be released from a case involving insults made to the national anthem. During a meeting with Nationalist Congress leader Sarath Pawar in Mumbai in 2021, Banerjee, who is the West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader, along with other journalists, sang the national anthem while sitting instead of standing up as a mark of respect. Vivekananda Gupta, a member of BJP, filed a case against her in the Magistrate’s Court. Despite a summons being issued in March last year, Banerjee did not appear, and her petition seeking discharge from the case was also dismissed by Judge Amit Borkar in the Bombay High Court.
