The authorities in Germany announced today (Wednesday) that they opened an investigation against Microsoft in order to measure the degree of dominance of the technology giant in the market. The purpose of the investigation by the German Antitrust Authority (Bundeskartellamt) is to determine whether Microsoft is of “supreme importance” – that is, whether it is large and powerful enough to be considered a threat to smaller companies. A determination of this type will require increased regulatory actions against the company.

The law, which entered into force in January 2021, gives the Antitrust Authority the authority to prohibit large companies from carrying out certain business operations if it is determined that they may harm competition, such as denying investments and even liquidating them.
