Delhi: Reacting to Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha after being convicted in a defamation case, Germini responded. The German Foreign Ministry responded with a statement that the fundamental principles of democracy should be applied to the matter.

We have come to our notice of the first instance court verdict against the Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and the cancellation of his parliamentary membership. As far as we know, it is understood that Rahul Gandhi can file an appeal against the verdict. It will be clear then whether this verdict will stand and whether there is any basis in the action to disqualify him,” the ministry spokesperson said.

The ministry spokesperson added that they expect the fundamental principles of judicial independence and democracy to apply in the case. The US has also responded to the issue earlier. “Respect for the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary are the cornerstones of any democracy. “We are monitoring the proceedings related to Rahul Gandhi in the court of India,” the US said.

Interacting with members of opposition parties is a normal matter in any country with bilateral relations. But the US has also stated that we do not have any particular interest in this matter now.
