Around 80 percent of early-stage startups are looking to hire new employees by 2023, at a time when large startups and IT firms are laying off large numbers.

Interestingly, while 57 percent of startups expect permanent hires, around 43 percent plan to hire temporary and gig workers.

Confederation of Indian Business and Industry and HR services firm Randstad India conducted their survey of employment trends at over 300 startups. Startups that have raised funding through Series A and B are well capitalized. They have said that they tend to hire new talent. According to the survey, 92 percent of the companies said they plan to hire due to new project orders, additional funding raised from investors and expansion strategies.
Junior and mid-level employees are more likely to be hired. About 38 percent of startups plan to hire more junior-level employees, and 27 percent plan to focus on hiring mid-level employees, the survey found. Agritech is looking to recruit senior level employees in the agriculture and automotive sectors.

Startups in Hyderabad and Pune offer opportunities for senior level employees. Cities like Kolkata, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Pune and Delhi NCR are likely to see mid-level hiring significant, the report said. About 28 percent of companies plan to expand their teams by 11 to 20 percent.

Apart from these, startups from the space and defense, energy and healthcare sectors are expected to increase their hiring activity by over 30 percent. Agritech, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), deeptech, e-commerce and delivery services are also said to increase workforce.
