Mumbai: Vice-captain Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of India’s tour of South Africa with a hamstring injury. Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the Test series with a right thigh injury sustained while training in the Nets in Mumbai on Sunday. Priyank Panchal has been named in the BCCI squad to replace Rohit in the Test series. Rohit injured his right thigh while training in the nets in Mumbai yesterday.

In ODIs, Rohit was selected to replace Virat Kohli as captain and in the Test series, Rohit was replaced by Ajinkya Rahane as vice-captain. However, the BCCI has not made it clear who will be the vice-captain in the Tests in case Rohit is ruled out of the Test series.

The BCCI has not yet commented on whether Ajinkya Rahane will be re-appointed as vice-captain or a new vice-captain.

Rohit’s replacement 31 – year – old Priyank Panchal is a consistent batsman in domestic cricket. Panchal, who regularly plays for India, plays for Gujarat in domestic cricket. In first-class cricket, Panchal has scored 7011 runs, including 24 centuries and 25 fifties. Panchal had scored 96 in the unofficial Test of Team A’s tour of South Africa ahead of India’s tour of South Africa.

The India-South Africa Test series starts on December 26. The three-match ODI series starts on January 19.
