Thiruvananthapuram: Famous playback singer P Jayachandran has been selected for the 2020 JC Daniel Award for Lifetime Contribution to Malayalam Film, Minister Saji Cherian said. The JC Daniel Award, the state government’s highest film award, carries a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, a certificate and a sculpture.

The jury said that P. Jayachandran, who has been in the film industry for more than half a century, has left his mark on the history of Malayalam film music. JC Daniel Award winner Adoor Gopalakrishnan is the Chairman, Actor, Screenwriter and Director Ranji Panicker, Actress Seema, Chalachithra Academy Chairman Kamal and Cultural Department Principal Secretary Rani George are the members of the committee that selected the award winner. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will present the award at a function to be held at the Durbar Hall of the Secretariat on the 23rd.

56 years ago in 1965 in the film Kunjali Maraikkar, P. Jayachandran entered the film industry by singing the song ‘Oru Mullappoomalayumai’ composed by Bhaskaran to the music of Chidambaranath and has sung over 10,000 songs in various languages. In 1985, he won the National Award for Best Playback Singer. He has won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Singer five times.
